Udemy is more affordable & has more courses, but John Academy is the higher quality service

It is true that Udemy has more courses then John Academy, but that’s not the whole story.

Anyone can become a teacher on Udemy, which has helped it grow it’s course selection so high, but the quality and consistency of the courses on John Academy is much higher, since only vetted teachers can create courses. This isn’t to say that the courses on Udemy are low quality or wildly inconsistent, quite the opposite actually. But when forced to compare Udemy VS John Academy it is clear that Udemy has the quantity, while John Academy has the quality.

Again, don’t take this the wrong way, as both services have a large selection of high quality courses. The reality is that while these two services are similar, they both have different underlying philosophies about how to provide their services.

Udemy has more teachers, while John Academy only works with a few hand-selected teachers.
Udemy allows anyone who has knowledge (and can prove it and pass some basic screening requirements) to create and sell their own courses on the platform. This is great because some of the best teachers are those who spent years in their industry doing the hard work. This means you can expect to find some crazy high level teachers on Udemy, but since the barriers to entry are so low, you will also find courses that are not perfectly constructed or were created by a teacher who isn’t naturally talented at teaching. Luckily, good courses are the rule on Udemy, with bad courses being the rare exception.

Udemy allows you to pay per course, while John Academy is priced by the course or allows you to pay a subscription fee to access multiple courses. John Academy also allows you to purchase a student ID card which is valid for discounts wherever student discounts are accepted. They’re able to provide this service because they are an accredited learning institution.

Course Quality Review

Winner: Tied
Both services offer high quality courses.
It’s difficult to choose a winner when it comes to course quality, because John Academy has fewer courses, they are generally more consistent in quality. Yet on the whole, I also find the majority of Udemy courses to meet this same level of quality. In the end, they both provide courses of comparable quality, so we’re calling it a tie on course quality.

Course Selection Review

Winner: Udemy
Udemy has over 90% more courses than John Academy.
Since the barrier to creating a course for Udemy is much lower than John Academy, there are tens of thousands more courses available on Udemy then there are on John Academy. This also means that far more subjects are covered on Udemy than on John Academy.

Learning Platform Review

Winner: Tied
Both services have easy to use platforms.
When I talk about platforms, I am talking about the ways that the site teaches you, like video tutorials, interactive projects and hands-on testing, as well as awarding certificates. Both Udemy and John Academy have good platforms, but neither of them stand out as great. They are both serviceable, and importantly neither of them has any noteworthy issues, which results in a tie.

User Experience Review

Winner: Udemy
Udemy has a slightly better user experience.
When we review the platform, we’re looking at the learning angles of the experience, but for the User Experience Review we look at everything else, including the sign-up process, the wait-times, the quality of courses, support, emails, billing and more. Fortunately, both of these websites provide a great overall user experience. The user interfaces are logical enough, signing up is straight forward, support staff reply quickly and billing is exactly what you’d expect. I did encounter one issue with John Academy that took a little longer to resolve than I would’ve liked, which is why Udemy wins the user experience category.

Value Proposition Review

Winner: Udemy
Udemy frequently runs big sales where you can learn a skill for barely any cash.
Both services provide a great value, especially with John Academy’s 20 course subscription for $99 and Udemy’s tendancy to run deep discounts on a regular basis. It was difficult picking a winner in this category, but Udemy takes the win because of just how cheap their courses become during a sale.

Overall Review

Winner: Udemy
A bigger selection helps Udemy win this comparison.
You really can’t go wrong when choosing between Udemy VS John Academy, but since this is a comparison review I am obligated to pick a winner. Honestly I use both services, but if I had to choose a superior service I think I would give the edge slightly to Udemy due to the large amount of courses they offer. John Academy is still a service you should consider, with their student ID and high quality courses being two prime reasons not to write the service off.

Pros & Cons of Each Service

Both Udemy and John Academy are amazing learning services and platforms, but they each have their PROs and CONs. In this section, I have outlined PROs and CONs for both services, specifically with how they compare to each other.

Final Thoughts

Comparing Udemy VS John Academy reveals both services to be almost equal in most regards. In reality, the biggest difference is the sheer volume of courses that Udemy offers. Most other MOOCs, including John Academy, does not provide more than 2% of the content that Udemy provides. However, depsite that deficiency they remain a competative service, which speaks volumes for the high quality nature of John Academy and their courses.
