Khan Academy VS Udemy Comparison

Khan Academy and Udemy are both valuable elearning platforms, but as you probably already know, they’re quite different and serve different purposes. Khan Academy is all about K-12 fundamentals while Udemy’s main selling point is that they provide a massive library of courses to choose from.

Khan Academy is a completely free service that provides courses on all the fundamentals for kindergarten, elementary, jr high, high school and early college. This is in stark contrast to Udemy, which is like of online learning marketplaces.

If you have need for unaccredited K-12 online courses, I definitely recommend Khan Academy. Outside of that, Udemy has Khan Academy beat in just about everything else… well, I actually think both platforms (the user interface and usability of the site) are about equal.

Khan Academy: From kindergarten to college level courses, Kahn Academy covers all the basics.
While you cannot deny that Udemy has more courses then Khan Academy, they are both great learning services in their own right.

Khan Academy: From kindergarten to college level courses, Kahn Academy covers all the basics. Udemy: Overall course selection.

Udemy: Overall course selection.
Khan Academy does not let just anyone teach their courses, but instead have a strict policy to only allow the best teachers to create one of their courses. Udemy is a learning platform that will allow any expert on a subject to create their own courses, as long as they pass a basic screening process. Khan Academy has better consistency and higher quality courses in general compared to Udemy because Khan Academy has fewer course creators who were screened heavily, while Udemy allows anyone to create courses.

The Udemy platform covers all the subjects which we write about here While Khan Academy doesn't offer courses in all the categories we track, they do cover Information Technology, Programming & Coding, Business, and a few other things.

Udemy covers subjects that I don’t explicitly cover on this website (yet) such as learning to speak a different language or studying the law and a lot more. In fact, Udemy has very niche and small audience courses, things that only a few thousand students across the whole world may be interested in. This includes things like creating a WordPress theme, how to get more followers on social media and other micro-subjects.

Remember, Khan Academy’s content is primarily aimed at kindergarten through high school with some basic college courses, so they stick to the beaten path of the subjects and types of courses you would expect from a traditional school. Udemy, by contrast, is concerned with providing a massive library of courses, which means the course creators have to get creative in order to not repeat the same subjects over and over again.

Course Quality Review

Winner: Udemy
Udemy consistently has the higher quality courses.
Despite Khan Academy strictly vetting all of their course creators, in my opinion Udemy still has higher quality courses even though almost anyone can create courses for the platform.

Course Selection Review

Winner: Udemy
Udemy has more courses than Khan Academy.
Udemy has more courses than Khan Academy. Udemy has more courses because they let anyone create a course, while Khan Academy has fewer courses because they strictly vet their course authors.

Learning Platform Review

Winner: Tied
Both Udemy & Khan Academy did a good job teaching.
When I talk about platforms, I am talking about the ways that the site teaches you, like video tutorials, interactive projects and hands-on testing, as well as awarding certificates. Both Khan Academy and Udemy provide amazing learning experiences with their platforms. They are both equally matched in these regards, so I am declaring this a tie.

User Experience Review

Winner: Udemy
Udemy has a slightly better user experience.
When we review the platform, we are looking at the learning angles of the experience, but for the User Experience Review we look at everything else, including the sign-up process, the wait-times, the quality of courses, support, emails, billing and more. As an end user, I found Khan Academy to be a good experience, but the user experience overall using Udemy was better. I definitely recommend them both, but Udemy is the winner in this category.

Value Proposition Review

Winner: Tied
Both services offer an incredible value for your money.
Value is a subjective thing, so reviewing the value proposition of a learning platform is difficult. In our opinion, both Khan Academy and Udemy provide a great value for the money you spend. Both services have a great value proposition.

Winner: Udemy
Out of these two great services, Udemy is our choice.
When I write reviews, I like to clearly outline the better choice. In this case, we have two great services, but Udemy managed to take the victory. We recommend Udemy because: Overall course selection.

Pros & Cons of Each Service

Both Khan Academy and Udemy are amazing learning services and platforms, but they each have their PROs and CONs. In this section, I have outlined PROs and CONs for both services, specifically with how they compare to each other.

Final Thoughts

Neither service is perfect for everybody, but they both have their particular audiences. Udemy offers courses on virtually anything you can think of, while only those studying the fundamentals of K-12 will benefit from Khan Academy.

Both Khan Academy and Udemy provide a great service. If I had to pick one service out of the two, I’d say that Udemy is more universally appealing since they have a massive library of courses which means there is content there for almost everyone. For some learners, especially those looking for K-12 or early college courses, Khan Academy might be the better fit.
