Khan Academy VS Skillshare Comparison

Khan Academy VS Skillshare is an apples to oranges comparison. Sure, they’re both online learning platforms that offer courses, but the similarities basically end there. Khan Academy focuses on free but unaccredited K-12 & early college course material while Skillshare is like the Netflix of learning platforms.

In this review, I contrast Khan Academy against Skillshare in side-by-side comparisons so that you clearly pick the one best suited to your needs. I start with a comparison of features, then deep dive into the course categories for each platform and concluding by rating my experiences with each platform and my experience learning with them.

Khan Academy is very easy to use, just sign up for a free account and start enrolling in courses, which are all free. You get handy features such as usage metrics and progress reports as well as some awards for completing courses. However, with a few exceptions the course selection at Khan Academy is limited to “core” subjects like math, science, and language, which limits the appeal of Khan Academy for those who have completed K-12 and/or some college.

Skillshare is like the Netflix of learning platforms, giving you access to one of the largest libraries of courses on the internet for a single monthly subscription price. If it’s a teachable skill, there is bound to be a course or a few hundred depending on the topic. You also get some of the same amenities like progress tracking of each course.

In terms of features, user interface and interactivity, Skillshare and Khan Academy are tied in my opinion, but for overall ease of use and user experience I feel like Skillshare provides a more cohesive package. Neither platform offers any kind of accreditation, but both Skillshare and Khan Academy are more about actually teaching you rather than giving you a certificate you can use for your resume.

Khan Academy: From kindergarten to college level courses, Kahn Academy covers all the basics.
While you cannot deny that Skillshare has more courses then Khan Academy, they are both great learning services in their own right.

Khan Academy does not let just anyone teach their courses, but instead have a strict policy to only allow the best teachers to create one of their courses. Skillshare is a learning platform that will allow any expert on a subject to create their own courses, as long as they pass a basic screening process. Khan Academy has better consistency and higher quality courses in general compared to Skillshare because Khan Academy has fewer course creators who were screened heavily, while Skillshare allows anyone to create courses.

The Skillshare platform covers all the subjects which we write about here LearnOnline.shop. While Khan Academy doesn't offer courses in all the categories we track, they do cover Information Technology, Programming & Coding, Business, and a few other things.

I’ve mentioned a few times in this article that Skillshare is like the Netflix of learning websites, which means that course creators on the platform are trying to find under-served topics to create courses about. This is why Skillshare covers far more subjects and course categories than most websites and only serves to grow their already massive library of courses.

Since Khan Academy focuses on kindergarten, elementary, jr high, high school and college courses, this greatly limits the scope of what subjects they cover to the standard K-12 curriculum. This means you will find all of Khan Academy’s topics covered by Skillshare, but you won’t find everything on Khan Academy that you can find on Skillshare.

The big advantages of Khan Academy over Skillshare is that Khan Academy is completely free. If you’re 18 or younger and doing homeschooling then Khan Academy is definitely a viable option as a supplement to an accredited program.

Course Quality Review

Winner: Skillshare
Skillshare consistently has the higher quality courses.
Despite Khan Academy strictly vetting all of their course creators, in my opinion Skillshare still has higher quality courses even though almost anyone can create courses for the platform.

Course Selection Review

Winner: Skillshare
Skillshare has more courses than Khan Academy.
Skillshare has more courses than Khan Academy. Skillshare has more courses because they let anyone create a course, while Khan Academy has fewer courses because they strictly vet their course authors.

Learning Platform Review

Winner: Tied
Both Skillshare & Khan Academy did a good job teaching.
When I talk about platforms, I am talking about the ways that the site teaches you, like video tutorials, interactive projects and hands-on testing, as well as awarding certificates. Both Khan Academy and Skillshare provide amazing learning experiences with their platforms. They are both equally matched in these regards, so I am declaring this a tie.

User Experience Review

Winner: Skillshare
Skillshare has a slightly better user experience.
When we review the platform, we are looking at the learning angles of the experience, but for the User Experience Review we look at everything else, including the sign-up process, the wait-times, the quality of courses, support, emails, billing and more. As an end user, I found Khan Academy to be a good experience, but the user experience overall using Skillshare was better. I definitely recommend them both, but Skillshare is the winner in this category.

Value Proposition Review

Winner: Tied
Both services offer an incredible value for your money.
Value is a subjective thing, so reviewing the value proposition of a learning platform is difficult. In our opinion, both Khan Academy and Skillshare provide a great value for the money you spend. Both services have a great value proposition.

Overall Review

Winner: Skillshare
Out of these two great services, Skillshare is our choice.
When I write reviews, I like to clearly outline the better choice. In this case, we have two great services, but Skillshare managed to take the victory. We recommend Skillshare because: One subscription fee gives you access to one of the largest online learning course libraries, with a range of subjects at your fingertips.

Pros & Cons of Each Service

Both Khan Academy and Skillshare are amazing learning services and platforms, but they each have their PROs and CONs. In this section, I have outlined PROs and CONs for both services, specifically with how they compare to each other.

Final Thoughts

If you’re trying to choose between Khan Academy VS Skillshare, just ask yourself: are you just interested in learning a skill or are you interested in studying fundamentals from K-12 or early college? If you’re just interested in learning a skill, then Skillshare lives up to it’s name, giving you access to thousands of courses for one low subscription price. On the otherhand, if you’re trying to learn K-12 for free, then Khan Academy is a no brainer.

For most learners, Skillshare is my recommendation, because with one subscription fee you get access to over ten thousand courses with new courses added daily. For those looking to supplment homeschooling or other fundamentals of online education, Khan Academy is probably a better fit. I’ve used both platforms and they serve different purposes.

Hopefully my comparison review has been helpful. Please, if you have any questions do not hesitate to leave a comment below. Thanks for reading and happy learning!
