Khan Academy VS Coursera Comparison

At a glance one might think that Khan Academy and Coursera seem like similar learning platforms, but a closer look reveals just how different they really are.

For instance, Coursera focuses on providing college accredited courses to anyone with access to the internet while Khan Academy provides free courses on fundamental K-12 and early college subjects exclusively. This means Khan Academy is best suited to learn from kindergarten up and into the beginning of college while Coursera is primarily relevant to adults pursuing higher education.

In this review I am going to compare and contrast Khan Academy VS Coursera against each other so that you can pick the right one that best fulfills your educational needs. I’ll begin by examining the features of both services, then review all the subjects matter they cover, and bring it all home by reviewing my experiences using these platforms to take courses.

Khan Academy is a great resource for free online courses that teach math, science and language from kindergarten into early college. Anything outside of that scope is not likely to be covered on Khan Academy. Anyone looking to supplement homeschooling or brush up on fundamentals before entering college will find Khan Academy to be invaluable.

Once you outgrow or run out of content on Khan Academy, Coursera provides a logical next step for some learning paths. I say that because Coursera has made it easy and free to take accredited online college courses. You can literally audit (take most of the course for free) almost every single course on the site. So if you don’t care about a certificate, you can actually learn from any of the courses on Coursera for free.

Khan Academy: From kindergarten to college level courses, Kahn Academy covers all the basics.
While you cannot deny that Coursera has more courses then Khan Academy, they are both great learning services in their own right.

Khan Academy: From kindergarten to college level courses, Kahn Academy covers all the basics. Coursera: College level courses taught by actual professors. The convenience of a MOOC with the perks of university.

Coursera: College level courses taught by actual professors. The convenience of a MOOC with the perks of university.
Khan Academy does not let just anyone teach their courses, but instead have a strict policy to only allow the best teachers to create one of their courses. Coursera is very strict about who can teach their courses, only allowing the best teachers to develop and publish courses. Both Khan Academy and Coursera have similiar quality courses, since they both only allow the most qualified teachers to create courses.

The Coursera platform covers all the subjects which we write about here LearnOnline.shop. While Khan Academy doesn't offer courses in all the categories we track, they do cover Information Technology, Programming & Coding, Business, and a few other things.

Coursera offers professional certifications with their tech partnerships from companies such as IBM and Google, which is something that Khan Academy doesn’t offer. A large amount of Coursera’s course library consists of tech related subject matter, with the majority of other subjects provided by universities.

Khan Academy has a narrow focus that limits the number of subjects they cover. This is because Khan Academy aims to provide free courses that teach the fundamentals for each grade level from K through 12 and even into college admissions. Unfortunately Khan Academy is unaccredited so students using it should also pursue a certificate or diploma from a traditional school in conjunction to using Khan Academy.

Course Selection Review

Winner: Coursera
Coursera has more courses than Khan Academy.
Coursera has more courses than Khan Academy. Both services do screen their course creators, but Coursera has a larger selection of courses to choose from.

Learning Platform Review

Winner: Coursera
It was slightly easier to follow along & learn using Coursera
When I talk about platforms, I am talking about the ways that the site teaches you, like video tutorials, interactive projects and hands-on testing, as well as awarding certificates. While the Khan Academy platform is great, it is not quite as good as Coursera in my experience. They are both great platform, but Coursera wins.

User Experience Review

Winner: Coursera
Coursera has a slightly better user experience.
When we review the platform, we are looking at the learning angles of the experience, but for the User Experience Review we look at everything else, including the sign-up process, the wait-times, the quality of courses, support, emails, billing and more. As an end user, I found Khan Academy to be a good experience, but the user experience overall using Coursera was better. I definitely recommend them both, but Coursera is the winner in this category.

Value Proposition Review

Winner: Khan Academy
Khan Academy offers a better value for most learners.
This is a tough category to judge because value is so subjective and some platforms are better values in certain situations but not others. To that end, in our opinion Khan Academy seems to be the better value for most people, although there are some arguments for Coursera being a great value as well.

Overall Review

Winner: Coursera
Out of these two great services, Coursera is our choice.
When I write reviews, I like to clearly outline the better choice. In this case, we have two great services, but Coursera managed to take the victory. We recommend Coursera because: College level courses taught by actual professors. The convenience of a MOOC with the perks of university.

Pros & Cons of Each Service

Both Khan Academy and Coursera are amazing learning services and platforms, but they each have their PROs and CONs. In this section, I have outlined PROs and CONs for both services, specifically with how they compare to each other.

Final Thoughts

It was a bit weird comparing Khan Academy VS Coursera because they don’t have much in common. After spending a bunch of time immersed taking courses on both platforms, it became easy for to see the obvious differences between these two platforms.

I do recommend both services, but if I had to pick one I’d choose Coursera as my recommendation, due to their easy access to accredited courses, degrees and certificates from prestigious universities. There are still a few situations where I feel like Khan Academy is clearly the better fit, especially for home schoolers who are working on K-12 fundamentals.

Each of these services are good and all of the courses on both platforms can be taken for free! This definitely helped me to evaluate both Coursera and Khan Academy. I have also completed full paid Coursera courses as well.

Anyway, this concludes my comparison guide. Please comment below you have anything to share or an opinion or story to share. Thanks for reading and happy learning!
