edX is an e-learning platform that lets you take almost any college class for free. They also offer paid certificates, microdegrees, and even full on masters degree programs. In addition, their courses are provided from major universities such as Harvard and MIT as well as large institutions such as IBM and Google.

Udemy is very different from edX. Udemy is more like Amazon.com of online learning marketplaces, where there are thousands of sellers who are able to submit their courses to be sold on Udemy.

edX: free college courses that can easily be upgraded for college credit, certificates, or degrees
While you cannot deny that Udemy has more courses then edX, they are both great learning services in their own right.

edX: free college courses that can easily be upgraded for college credit, certificates, or degrees Udemy: Overall course selection.

Udemy: Overall course selection.
edX does not let just anyone teach their courses, but instead have a strict policy to only allow the best teachers to create one of their courses. Udemy is a learning platform that will allow any expert on a subject to create their own courses, as long as they pass a basic screening process. edX has better consistency and higher quality courses in general compared to Udemy because edX has fewer course creators who were screened heavily, while Udemy allows anyone to create courses.

Both platforms cover all the subjects which we write about here LearnOnline.shop.

Udemy has over 100,000 courses, making it one of the largest libraries of courses in the world. This means that Udemy has very niche and small audience courses, things that only a few thousand students across the whole world may be interested in. This includes tiny niches, micro-subjects, new trends, obscure old topics, and everything in between.

edX covers everything you would expect from colleges and trade school. Because they partner with so many universities and institutions, they are able to offer thousands of courses on almost any subject you can think of.

Course Quality Review

Winner: edX
edX consistently has the higher quality courses.
In my opinion, while both services offer high quality courses, the victor has to be edX because they consistently have higher quality courses when compared to Udemy. Undoubtedly the fact that edX has heavily screened and vetted course creators, while Udemy allows anyone to make their own courses has a lot to do with the difference in quality.

Course Selection Review

Winner: Udemy
Udemy has more courses than edX.
Udemy has more courses than edX. Udemy has more courses because they let anyone create a course, while edX has fewer courses because they strictly vet their course authors.

Learning Platform Review

Winner: edX
It was slightly easier to follow along & learn using edX
When I talk about platforms, I am talking about the ways that the site teaches you, like video tutorials, interactive projects and hands-on testing, as well as awarding certificates. I really like the Udemy platform, but not as much as the learning experience provided by edX. I do think both platforms are great ways to learn, but I found edX better suited towards teaching me effectively.

User Experience Review

Winner: Tied
Both edX and Udemy have a good user experience.
When we review the platform, we are looking at the learning angles of the experience, but for the User Experience Review we look at everything else, including the sign-up process, the wait-times, the quality of courses, support, emails, billing and more. Fortunately, both of these websites provide a great overall user experience. The user interfaces are logical enough, signing up is straight forward, support staff reply within a business day and billing is exactly what you would expect. Since neither platform sticks out from the other in these regards, this one is a tie in our books.

Value Proposition Review

Winner: Udemy
Udemy has the better value proposition for most people.
This section is hard to review because value is subjective and some platforms are better values in certain situations but not in others. However, when comparing edX VS Udemy, we find Udemy to be the better value for most people. We do recommend edX as well though.

Overall Review

Winner: Udemy
Out of these two great services, Udemy is our choice.
When I write reviews, I like to clearly outline the better choice. In this case, we have two great services, but Udemy managed to take the victory. We recommend Udemy because: Overall course selection.

Pros & Cons of Each Service

Both edX and Udemy are amazing learning services and platforms, but they each have their PROs and CONs. In this section, I have outlined PROs and CONs for both services, specifically with how they compare to each other.

Final Thoughts

Neither service is perfect for everybody, but they both have their particular audiences. Udemy offers courses on virtually anything you can think of, while those looking to take free online college courses should definitely give edX a try.

Both edX and Udemy are fantastic in different ways. If I had to pick one of them to recommend: Udemy has courses for everyone of every age because of their massive library of courses. For some learners, especially those looking for accredited college courses, edX is clearly the better fit.
