While both FutureLearn and edX partner with universities and other institutions to provide their courses, edX has gone for bulk courses while FutureLearn has gradually hand selected it’s courses and partnerships.

Each service can be used internationally, but U.S. learners will probably want to stick with edX while European students would be better suited with FutureLearn. This is assuming your using either service for college credits.

edX: free college courses that can easily be upgraded for college credit, certificates, or degrees
It is true that edX has more courses then FutureLearn, but that is not the whole story.

edX: free college courses that can easily be upgraded for college credit, certificates, or degrees FutureLearn: Flexible enough to teach you small subjects, but versatile enough to get you a full college degree.

FutureLearn: Flexible enough to teach you small subjects, but versatile enough to get you a full college degree.
edX does not let just anyone teach their courses, but instead have a strict policy to only allow the best teachers to create one of their courses. FutureLearn is a learning platform that will allow any expert on a subject to create their own courses, as long as they pass a basic screening process. edX has better consistency and higher quality courses in general compared to FutureLearn because edX has fewer course creators who were screened heavily, while FutureLearn allows anyone to create courses.

Course Quality Review

Winner: edX
edX consistently has the higher quality courses.
In my opinion, while both services offer high quality courses, the victor has to be edX because they consistently have higher quality courses when compared to FutureLearn. Undoubtedly the fact that edX has heavily screened and vetted course creators, while FutureLearn allows anyone to make their own courses has a lot to do with the difference in quality.

Course Selection Review

Winner: edX
edX has more courses than FutureLearn.
edX has more courses than FutureLearn. Even though edX limits the number of course creators on their platform, while FutureLearn does not, edX manages to have more courses despite this!

Learning Platform Review

Winner: Tied
Both FutureLearn & edX did a good job teaching.
When I talk about platforms, I am talking about the ways that the site teaches you, like video tutorials, interactive projects and hands-on testing, as well as awarding certificates. Both edX and FutureLearn provide amazing learning experiences with their platforms. They are both equally matched in these regards, so I am declaring this a tie.

User Experience Review

Winner: Tied
Both edX and FutureLearn have a good user experience.
When we review the platform, we are looking at the learning angles of the experience, but for the User Experience Review we look at everything else, including the sign-up process, the wait-times, the quality of courses, support, emails, billing and more. Fortunately, both of these websites provide a great overall user experience. The user interfaces are logical enough, signing up is straight forward, support staff reply within a business day and billing is exactly what you would expect. Since neither platform sticks out from the other in these regards, this one is a tie in our books.

Value Proposition Review

Winner: edX
edX offers a better value for most learners.
This is a tough category to judge because value is so subjective and some platforms are better values in certain situations but not others. To that end, in our opinion edX seems to be the better value for most people, although there are some arguments for FutureLearn being a great value as well.

Overall Review

Winner: edX
Out of these two great services, edX is our choice.
When I write reviews, I like to clearly outline the better choice. In this case, we have two great services, but edX managed to take the victory. We recommend edX because: free college courses that can easily be upgraded for college credit, certificates, or degrees

Pros & Cons of Each Service

Both edX and FutureLearn are amazing learning services and platforms, but they each have their PROs and CONs. In this section, I have outlined PROs and CONs for both services, specifically with how they compare to each other.

Final Thoughts

Both edX and FutureLearn allow you to earn an accredited certificate or degree from a prestigious college, but despite those similarities there are many differences between the two including institutational partners, course selection, user experience and geographic location.

I really like both services, but if I had to choose one it would be edX, since there are more courses, it is more affordable, and you can take almost all the courses for free. FutureLearn is still awesome and their platform and user experience remain one of my favorites to date.
