Udemy is more affordable & has more courses, but Coursera is the higher quality service

It is true that Udemy has more courses then Coursera, but that’s not the whole story.

Anyone can become a teacher on Udemy, which has helped it grow it’s course selection so high, but the quality and consistency of the courses on Coursera is much higher, since only vetted college professors can create courses. This isn’t to say that the courses on Udemy are low quality or wildly inconsistent, quite the opposite actually. But when forced to compare Udemy VS Coursera it is clear that Udemy has the quantity, while Coursera has the quality.

Again, don’t take this the wrong way, as both services have a large selection of high quality courses. The reality is that while these two services are similar, they both have different underlying philosophies about how to provide their services.

Udemy has more teachers, while Coursera only works with University professors.
Udemy allows anyone who has knowledge (and can prove it and pass some basic screening requirements) to create and sell their own courses on the platform. This is great because some of the best teachers are those who spent years in their industry doing the hard work. This means you can expect to find some crazy high level teachers on Udemy, but since the barriers to entry are so low, you will also find courses that are not perfectly constructed or were created by a teacher who isn’t naturally talented at teaching. Luckily, good courses are the rule on Udemy, with bad courses being the rare exception.

Both services allow you to pay per course, but Udemy is much more affordable. That’s because Udemy courses are unaccredited and at best give you a Udemy certificate, while Coursera provides actual college courses and accredited degrees and thus, has higher prices and literal tuition to pay.

Both Udemy and Coursera cover all the subjects which we write about here LearnOnline.shop, so it’s a draw in these regards. However, it is true that Udemy covers far more subjects than Coursera, which again just comes down to the fact that Udemy has so many courses available then other services, while Coursera is focused on higher education.

If you’re interested in earning an accredited degree in one of these subjects, then Coursera is the clear choice. However, if your main objective is to learn a skill as cheaply as possible, then Udemy wins hands down.

Course Quality Review

Winner: Coursera
Coursera consistently has the higher quality courses.
Coursera has the higher quality courses because they are all created by University professors, while Udemy courses are created by anyone who demonstrates that they’re knowledgeable on a subject. However, just because you know a subject, doesn’t necessarily mean you’re good at teaching that subject. While Udemy clearly has more courses, the quality of those courses can vary wildly.

Course Selection Review

Winner: Udemy
Udemy has over 90% more courses than Coursera.
Since the barrier to creating a course for Udemy is much lower than Coursera, there are tens of thousands more courses available on Udemy then there are on Coursera. This also means that far more subjects are covered on Udemy than on Coursera.

Learning Platform Review

Winner: Coursera
Coursera’s courses are simple to use & designed logically. I never got lost.
When I talk about platforms, I am talking about the ways that the site teaches you, like video tutorials, interactive projects and hands-on testing, as well as awarding certificates. Both Udemy and Coursera have good platforms, but I prefer the Coursera platform slightly more. Why? Because it is easy to navigate, easy to follow, and easy to pick up exactly where you left off. Udemy’s platform is good too, but not quite as good as Coursera. In the end, this is entirely up to user preference, so your mileage may vary.

User Experience Review

Winner: Tied
Both Udemy and Coursera have a good user experience.
When we review the platform, we’re looking at the learning angles of the experience, but for the User Experience Review we look at everything else, including the sign-up process, the wait-times, the quality of courses, support, emails, billing and more. Fortunately, both of these websites provide a great overall user experience. The user interfaces are logical enough, signing up is straight forward, support staff reply within a business day and billing is exactly what you’d expect. Since neither platform sticks out from the other in these regards, this one is a tie in our books.

Value Proposition Review

Winner: Udemy
Udemy frequently runs big sales where you can learn a skill for barely any cash.
Coursera is inexpensive for college degrees, but if you’re just looking to learn a skill then Udemy offers a much bigger bang for your buck. Coursera does offer a high value proposition for those who want an accredited degree or certification from Google or IBM, but outside of those specific areas, Udemy is much less expensive. In addition, Udemy routinely has massive sales where it is not uncommon to pick up a course for under $20 USD. So while both services offer tremendous value, when compared, Udemy is the superior value proposition for most learners.

Overall Review

Winner: Tied
Out of these two great services, the one you choose depends specifically on your needs.
When I write reviews, I like to clearly outline the better choice. However, in this case, the better choice depends on what you’re trying to achieve. If you’re looking to get a college degree, I can recommend Coursera right now, since Udemy doesn’t have that option. If you’re looking to study as many different topics as possible, Udemy clearly has a much larger selection of courses, so Udemy wins in that scenario. If money is tight, Udemy often has sales, but if official certification from Google or IBM is your goal, then Coursera is the clear victor. For everyone else, these two services are tough to choose between. If you’re still stuck trying to choose between both services, take some time to deep dive onto both websites.

Pros & Cons of Each Service

Both Udemy and Coursera are amazing learning services and platforms, but they each have their PROs and CONs. In this section, I have outlined PROs and CONs for both services, specifically with how they compare to each other.

Final Thoughts

Comparing Udemy VS Coursera is difficult because they are both top-notch services, but they serve slightly different purposes and cater to different audiences. Regardless of which of these two that you choose, you are in good hands and can rest assured that if you follow up and put in the work, you will learn new skills and acquire certificates for your resume.

I hope this comparison review has helped you, but if you have any questions please leave a comment or reach out via email. Thanks for reading and happy learning!
